What sets Australian Migration Agents apart

What is the Global Talent 858 visa?

The Global Talent Visa (Subclass 858) is a pivotal component of the Global Talent Independent Program for Australia, designed to streamline the process of obtaining permanent residency for highly skilled individuals with international recognition.

This initiative targets individuals who excel in various fields, spanning professions, sports, arts, academia, and research, and aims to harness their expertise for the benefit of the Australian economy and Australian community. The program boasts a limited quota, with eligibility hinging on global recognition within one's field, nomination by an acceptable sponsor, and the potential to significantly contribute to Australia's development.

The visa application process entails thorough documentation, including proof of achievements, relationship documents, and character assessments. Successful applicants, along with their family members, can enjoy the privileges of permanent residency in Australia, enriching the nation's cultural fabric and fostering international collaboration across various sectors.

At the time of writing, information about the new National Innovation visa that is going to replace the Global Talent visa is yet to be announced, however, applicants should consider how these changes affect them before making a visa application.

How the Global Talent visa works

Applicants should be aware that there are two Global Talent visa pathways. These are the Global Talent visa pathway and the Distinguished Talent visa pathway. The Global Talent visa pathway provides priority processing for highly skilled applicants with an internationally recognised record of exceptional achievements in identified priority sectors and who are likely to earn at least the Fair Work High Income threshold. The Distinguished Talent pathway, on the other hand, is for applicants with an internationally recognised record of exceptional achievement in sectors other than the target sectors.

To apply for the Global Talent pathway, applicants must first submit an expression of interest and receive an invitation to apply. For the Distinguished Talent visa pathway, an expression of interest and invitation are not required. It is important for applicants to determine which way they will apply under to ensure the validity of their application.

Once their pathway has been confirmed, applicants must gather the necessary documents, pay the application fee and lodge their application online.

After the application is validly lodged, the Department will begin processing the application. During this time, the Department may request additional information or clarification and may direct applicants to undergo various procedures. If applicants notice any errors or experience changes in their circumstances. They should promptly contact the Department.

The Department will notify applicants in writing once a decision has been made. If the visa is granted, the Department’s notification will include the visa grant number, the start date of the visa and any visa conditions. If the application is refused, the Department will provide reasons for the refusal and information on any applicable grounds of review.

At the time of writing, visa application fees stand at $4,180 for the primary applicant, $2,095 for each secondary applicant aged 18 or older, and $1,045 for each secondary applicant under 18.

For applicants aged 18 or older who lack functional English proficiency at the time of application, an additional payment, referred to as the second instalment, is necessary to fulfil the English skills requirement for visa approval. Global Talent processing times

The duration of application processing can differ for a range of reasons. These reasons include the current workload of the Department, the application’s complexity and any delays that arise from an incomplete, inaccurate or insufficient application being lodged. As applications are assessed individually, this makes it challenging to predict exactly how long any application may take.

Unfortunately, individuals are not able to contact the Department following lodgement of their application to receive an update on processing.

Applicants should be aware the Department of Home Affairs provides a provisional estimate of processing times for Global Talent visas on their website. At the time of writing, under the Distinguished Talent visa pathway, 50% of applications are processed in 28 months and 90% are processed in 34 months. At the time of writing, under the Global Talent visa pathway, 50% of applications are processed in 9 months and 90% of applications are processed in 12 months.

Here at Australian Migration Agents, we endeavour to lodge meticulous, top-tier applications to mitigate any potential delays and enhance the prospects of approval. Our aim is to attain favourable results by offering extensive assistance and direction at every stage of the application procedure.

Global Talent visa considerations

There are several things that potential Global Talent visa applicants should keep in mind:

Eligibility for this visa depends on demonstrating exceptional and outstanding achievement in specific fields that benefit Australian society. This is a high threshold so applicants should carefully assess whether they meet this criteria before applying.

The Global Talent visa is set to be replaced by the end of 2024 with the new National Innovation visa. Although details are at the time of writing limited, it is expected that there will be similarities between the two visas. Applicants should stay informed about these changes and how they might impact future visa applications.

Each visa application is independently assessed by the Australian Government and the Department retains sole discretion over visa decisions. While an Australian Migration Agent cannot guarantee that every application will be approved, we can help increase the likelihood of a successful outcome by guiding applicants on how to submit a ‘decision-ready’ application.
