What sets Australian Migration Agents apart

What is the Contributory aged parent visa (subclass 884/864)?

If you are a parent of an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen, and you are at least 67 years of age, you could qualify to apply for a Contributory Aged Parent visa.

The Contributory Aged Parent visa comprises two subclasses: 884, which is a temporary visa permitting residence in Australia for up to 2 years, and 864, which is a permanent visa.

Eligibility requirements for an Contributory aged parent visa

Australian Migration Agents can offer guidance on your migration options and your eligibility for Contributory Parent visa subclasses 884/864 based on your individual circumstances. In broad terms, an eligible visa sponsor for subclasses 884/864 must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a settled Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen
  • Agree to provide accommodation and financial support for the applicant for their initial two years in Australia.
  • The eligibility requirements for visa applicants for both subclasses are generally the same, with the only difference being that the permanent visa requires an assurance of support. Otherwise, applicants must:

For Visa Applicant:

  • Be in Australia, but not in immigration clearance when applying for the visa
  • Not have applied for or hold a subclass 870 Sponsored Parent (Temporary) visa
  • Have an eligible child to sponsor them (Child = biological, adoptive, or step-child)
  • Be at least 67 years old (Australian pension age)
  • Not have a 'no further stay' condition on their current visa

Future visa pathways

Upon being granted the subclass 864 visa, the holder will attain Australian Permanent residency. They have the option to remain as a Permanent resident or pursue Australian citizenship if eligible.

Opting for Australian citizenship is a personal decision, but it offers benefits such as access to Australian public sector employment and protection against visa cancellations.

For those choosing to stay as permanent residents, it's important to apply for a Resident Return Visa (subclass 155) every 5 years to maintain the ability to travel internationally.

Frequently asked questions

Read our most commonly asked questions about the subclass 886/864 visas

What is the difference between a contributory parent visa and a contributory aged parent visa?

The Aged Parent Visa and the Contributory Parent Visa share the status of being permanent residence visas upon approval. However, they differ notably in their application processing times and costs. The Contributory Parent Visa typically has a processing time of approximately 18 to 26 months, while the Aged Parent Visa may take up to 18 or more years for processing.

Both visa types can be lodged while the applicant is onshore. Thus, while both visas offer the same permanent residence status upon approval, the discrepancy lies in the application cost and processing duration.

How long does it take to get a contributory aged parent visa?

As we guide you, the Australian Migration Agents team will keep you informed about the Department of Home Affairs' expected processing timeframe, which currently may extend to at least 12 years for both subclass 884 and subclass 864 visa applications.

What is the age limit for a contributory aged parent visa?

The age limit for the visa is set at a minimum of 67 years, equivalent to the Australian pension age. For applicants younger than this age, the Parent visa (subclass 103) may be suitable.
