What sets Australian Migration Agents apart

What is the parent visa (subclass 103)

The Parent visa Subclass 103 is a permanent visa that permits a parent of an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen to relocate to Australia. This visa type enables holders to obtain permanent residency and sponsor their family members to come to Australia.

The main difference between the Parent visa (subclass 103) and the Aged Parent visa (subclass 804) is that subclass 103 has no age requirement, whereas subclass 804 requires the applicant to be at least 67 years old.

Eligibility requirements for a parent visa subclass 103

The Australian Migration Agents team can offer advice regarding your eligibility for a Parent visa subclass 103, as well as discuss your overall migration options based on your specific circumstances.

In general terms, an eligible subclass 103 visa sponsor must meet the following requirements:

  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Be an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident, or an eligible New Zealand citizen settled in Australia
  • Agree to provide support, housing, and financial assistance for the applicant for the first 2 years they live in Australia

If the sponsor is under 18 years of age, the child's partner, guardian, relative, or an eligible community organisation that has a relationship with the child may be eligible to sponsor a Parent applicant. However, sponsorship must be approved by the Department of Home Affairs. Further advice from our agents is recommended based on your specific circumstances.

A valid application for subclass 103 Parent visa requires the applicant to meet the following criteria. It is recommended you seek professional advice on your eligibility and options. The criteria outline that you must:

  • Be sponsored by an eligible sponsor
  • Have not already applied for or hold a Sponsored Parent (Temporary) (subclass 870) visa
  • Meet the balance of family test. You will pass this test if you have more children living in Australia than in any other country, or at least half of your children are eligible to sponsor you.
  • Have an 'Assurance of Support,' which is a legal agreement that the sponsor will provide support to you, and you will not rely on Centrelink payments for 4 years.
  • Meet the health and character requirements
  • Have paid back outstanding debts to the Australian Government (if any)
  • Have private health insurance
  • Not have had a visa cancelled or previous application refused
  • Sign the Australian values statement

Future visa pathways

In the event that you are granted the Parent visa subclass 103, you are considered a Permanent resident of Australia, and you become eligible to access a range of benefits available to Australians relating to health, education, and other government services.

You can choose to remain a permanent resident, or you can choose to apply for citizenship if eligible. Although it is not compulsory to become an Australian citizen, many people follow this pathway as it can provide greater security and other benefits, such as consular services while overseas.

If you choose to remain a Permanent resident, you will need to apply for a Resident Return Visa (subclass 155) every 5 years in order to travel internationally.
